Ford Fusion Active - Is The Discontinued Fusion Making A Return?

Ford's Fusion Sedan May Be Making Its Return

Ford had made announcements about its plans for 2018 to discontinue its sedan lineup in North America in favor of focusing more on its SUV lineup and electrifying it for the future.

With the Ford Fusion 2020, the auto manufacturing giant officially retired the Ford Fusion model.

The first-generation Ford Fusion models were built using the CD3 platform that was designed by Mazda, with various engine options also being made by Mazda.

Despite all the talk about Ford discontinuing the Fusion lineup, Ford engineers have been spotted trying out what only appears to be yet another Fusion model on the testing tracks. Slated to release in 2023, here is what we know so far about the new 2023 Ford Fusion.

Redesigned Exterior

The grille and rear design for the new Ford Fusion model will be completely reinvented from previous iterations. While many critical design specs will remain the same, the detailing in its styling features is expected to give the 2023 Ford Fusion a far more futuristic and sophisticated aesthetic.

A facelift, new grille design, and potentially reinventing it into a hatchback style are a few things we can expect. However, moving to the hatchback design on the sedan might make more sense because it aligns with Ford's decision to discontinue its sedans in North America to focus more on SUVs.

Expected Powertrain Specifications

The first generation of Ford Fusion came with various iterations of Duratec engines, with options ranging from a 2.3-liter to a 3.5-liter engine. In addition, a hybrid trim that utilizes nickel-metal hydride batteries was also available with the first-generation Ford Fusion. Most of the engines in the first generation were designed and manufactured by Mazda.

The second-generation Ford Fusion came with more eco-friendly EcoBoost engines and even a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 variation for its sport trim. While there is a lack of official information about the 2023 Ford Fusion's powertrain specifications, we can expect various trims and engine options, alongside plug-in hybrid and hybrid variations.

What The 2023 Ford Fusion's Performance Might Be Like

The 2020 Ford Fusion featured a 2.5-liter Duratec engine that pumped out 175-hp with a smooth 6-speed auto transmission system. The Fusion's base model specifications never offered much in terms of a powerful performance. Still, it featured trims with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for more raw power.

The handling for the Ford Fusion models has always been smooth without a lot of body roll. The 2023 Ford Fusion might get an even more powerful engine in its base model with an advanced transmission system that enhances the driving experience.

Safety Features Powered By Tech

The 2023 Ford Fusion is likely going to build on the features for the 2020 model and provide better safety and driver-assistance features. For example, we expect the Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite to be a standard offering in all 2023 Ford Fusion variations. The suite will likely include blindspot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, pre-collision assist, brake assistance, automatic headlights, and much more.

Infotainment And Connectivity

The 2020 Ford Fusion came with a 4.2-inch LCD screen and a basic stereo system compatible with a stereo player. However, the model came with the optional Sync 3 Infotainment System designed by Ford to offer a more immersive driving experience that keeps you entertained and connected while driving. We expect the 2023 Ford Fusion Active to boast the Sync 3 Infotainment System or a successor that has the latest features, complete with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 Ford Fusion Active is shrouded in mystery, with various rumors about the model being a hatchback, another sedan, or even a crossover. With Ford's push towards producing EVs and phasing out its gasoline models in the future, we might even see an all-electric version of the Ford Fusion Active. But, for now, most information has been restricted. So join us as we wait on the edge of our seats for more concrete news about the 2023 Ford Fusion Active.
