Hi folks, bit of a weird one here. We've been getting HP 250 G7s in for our users for a while now, and they're reliable for what they're needed for, most of the time we can set them up, shift them off, and have few issues aside from the odd update.

On Friday a user reported their laptop wasn't outputting to their second screen. Each user has a second monitor they connect to, in this instance the connection was Laptop [only has a HDMI output] > HDMI/VGA adapter > VGA cable > VGA port on the monitor [which doesn't have a HDMI port] - now when the laptop and monitor are connected the monitor comes out of sleep mode, displays that no signal is being received to the VGA port, then goes back into sleep mode.

I've tried the following steps:

  • Swapped out the monitor for another - Same issue, no signal
  • Swapped out the VGA port - Same issue, no signal
  • Swapped out the HDMI/VGA adapter - Same issue, no signal
  • Swapped out the laptop itself for another - Immediately recognizes the monitor and displays a second screen

Given this I'm guessing it's a problem with the laptop. I've updated it completely in terms of Windows Update [Win10 1903], all drivers are up to date, BIOS is up to date, I can't see what's stopping this laptop dsiplaying, its almost like it simply isn't sending out a signal - If I connect another monitor to it, it doesn't even see it in Device Manager.

Based on the above, does anybody have any suggestions? My worry now is that it might be a faulty HDMI port but open to any other suggestions. Thanks! :D

I'm not sure from the post whether you've tried this, but you should find something with HDMI input and see if the laptop can display there before you blame the HDMI port. I'm not familiar with the laptop you bought, but it's possible it doesn't support sending an analog signal out the HDMI port, so if you're using a simple adapter cable, it wouldn't work - in that case you would need an actual converter to take the digital HDMI signal and turn it into an analog VGA signal. I'm surprised HP didn't include a mini-DP port for converting to other video outputs.

If it doesnt see it in Device Manager, try Win-P and/or detecting it manually. Next step would be nuke the display driver and re-install with second monitor connected.

Sorry, I should have clarified - It was working fine up until last Friday, no issues for a couple of months, and then suddenly it seemed to just stop working. We use this same setup [HDMI>Adapter>VGA>Monitor] setup on plenty of similar devices [same laptop, and in some cases same monitor model] without issue.

I've just tried a direct HDMI to HDMI connection and that's worked fine as you say - odd that through an adapter it isn't seeing it, when so many other users don't have an issue...

I have a Dell Precision where HDMI-VGA works fine on first boot but if the computer goes to sleep the second monitor will not come back up without unplug/replug on the adapter. Finally surrendered and just connected it HDMI ... apparently the adapter knows new but not how to re-establish existing in my case.

If it stopped working - Id go through the update history and see if the display driver was updated around the time this started.

In that case, I agree withkevinhughes2. Try reinstalling or rolling back the display driver to see if it changes anything. It may just be stuck on a certain type of secondary display and refuses to detect what output it should be using.

So it's started working again now, as perCopperskull's suggestion, I connected the laptop to a monitor with a direct HDMI>HDMI connection, and it immediately found it and began outputting to it, which makes sense. Then I connected the HDMI/VGA adater setup back into it, and it started seeing the second monitor again through that setup! Absolutely baffling, but it seems to have fixed it, it's working fine now *shrug* it's nothing I've done, between making this thread and now it's just sat on my desk in sleep mode XD

On a side note I've been pushing for a budget to replace our monitors with HDMI compatible ones, and the same models across the board for consistency what with most of our computers being G7s and only having HDMI ports, but so far no go :[

Thanks for your suggestions! :D

#####
Software and drivers for HP 250 G7 Notebook PC

You may have bad or lose contacts on your cables, defective HDMI - VGA adapter, faulty VGA input on the monitor, incorrect input set on the monitor, and so on.

But certainly HDMI output on the notebook is fully functional.

Update BIOS, firmware and drivers.
Check cables and HDMI - VGA adapter by testing them on another system.
Set manually input on the monitor to VGA.

Disable/uncheck in Windows "Turn on fast startup [recommended]"
You can do it via Control Panel, registry or GPO.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power]
"HiberbootEnabled"=dword:00000000

Add TMM Transient Multimon Manager UseIViewHelper into registry
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TMM]
"UseIViewHelper"=dword:00000000

You need to enable monitor manually in Windows in some instances when adapter is used to connect the monitor.
