Why doesnt my music stop when I take my AirPods out?

Picked up a pair this week and the left seems to only pause/play about 60% of the time while the double-tap for Siri seems to only work about 75% of the time. The right pauses/plays maybe 10% of attempts and triggers Siri even less frequently. Returned the original pair today and the replacements seem to perform about the same way. I've tried with them paired to three different devices and the results remain essentially the same.

Anyone experienced similar? Any ideas on working this out? I'd really like to keep these but for what they cost I expect them to perform as advertised the vast majority of the time.

Under your Bluetooth settings, try selecting forget this device and then initiate a re-pair.

Tried this with the first and second pair without any luck unfortunately.

My left one works perfectly but the right is as you describe. It only plays/pauses abut 30% of the time. I think it's a fault of the sensors.
I'm going to return it next week although I have a feeling that's why they're pushing the new ones out.

Yeah, thinking I'll have to give up on these and try again with the new model.

I doubt this has anything to do with the new model. Had AirPods since day one, never had the problem, nor have I seen many others complain they've had the problem either here, or irl.

I'm not saying your problem doesn't exist - you are having the problem and they are likely faulty - but it's a stretch suggesting the new model is arriving due to a tiny minority having your problem.

Just to update this thread, my right one now works perfectly now that Im on iOS 11.

Might be, but it also might be that the optical placement sensor was blocked or dirty. Had this issue with mine briefly but after cleaning the optical sensor [the round hole next to the oval one on the AirPods] the problem went away.

Also, try cleaning your ears. Seriously.

I was having this issue after updating to iOS 12 public Beta. My first thought was it's a bug in the beta, but I just tried the suggestion above, of forgetting the bluetooth device. I reconnected the AirPods and now it appears to be working again. I can now remove one or both AirPods and the music auto-pauses and restarts when I place them back in my ears.
