Classic minimalist fashion

Fashion trends come and go, but minimalism sticks around. From Coco Chanel in the 1920s to Roy Halston in the 70s to Helmut Lang in the 90s, designers throughout the decades have all brought their own spin to the prevailing style. The components may change from season to season [some years, its characterized by boxy brown suits, while other years, black drop-waist dresses take center stage], but the premise remains the same.

Minimalism, in essence, is all about taking away the flash and clutter. Ease and elegance are its hallmarks, and so is a neutral color palette. And here to illustrate a guide to what the style means today are four of the chicest minimalists on our Instagram feeds: stylist Rachael Wang, fashion writers Abisola Omole and Stephanie Broek, and digital content creator TyLynn Nguyen. Each proves, more often than not, it is the simplest things that make the most impact.

How would you describe minimalist fashion?
Minimalism, it goes without saying, is about simplicity. To me, it is about paring down garments to their purest form, stripping them of unnecessary embellishments, and just focusing entirely on tailoring and purpose. In a way, minimalism renders clothing nondescript, unidentifiable, and the person wearing them could be anyone, anywhere.

Why is minimalism your go-to aesthetic?
I believe that clothes should be useful, practical. And to me, there is nothing better than impeccable tailoring.

Are you a lifelong minimalist or a convert?
I think I always appreciated utilitarian clothing, but it wasn't until I grew up that I retroactively learned to appreciate the purity of design by the likes of Jil Sander, Ann Demeulemeester, Helmut Lang, Calvin Klein, and Martin Margiela in the mid 90s.

Who is your minimalist style icon?
The late 90s, suit-wearing Michael Jordan.

Ribbed-Knit Roll-Neck Shrug

Minimalism doesn't necessarily mean boring.

Sonia Carrascos inside-out trousers are a nod to Martin Margielas obsession with taking garments apart and putting them back together again. They achieve the simple yet subversive sentiment that minimalism does best.

How would you describe minimalist fashion?
Id say its usually grounded in effortlessness and the ability to look put-together with only a few components. I find that you can be excessive with layers only when the colors are of similar hues. Theres usually an air of cohesion. The pieces you wear complement each other rather than fight for attention.

Why is minimalism your go-to aesthetic?
Ive been reflecting on this a lot recently, and I think its because my life can be quite hectic, so I strive for peace in whatever forms available. A minimal outfit usually connotes harmony, and thats something I really appreciate.

Are you a lifelong minimalist or a convert?
A bit of both, as I find I go in and out of minimal style moods. Ive never 100 percent been a minimalist, and I wont be in the future. I find minimal clothing to be practical, as I spend so much of my time working. I end up dressing this way more often than not.

Who is your minimalist style icon?
Though she has her moments, like me, when shell experiment with the color palette of her outfits, I find Rosie Huntington-Whiteleys style to be quite minimal and cool.

When I come across an item that is soft, classic in style, and that just has a natural ease to it, I know its for me. This polo neck sweater has all of these characterizes, making it a minimal must-have.

How would you describe minimalist fashion?
It's all about simplicity and quality; timeless classics in neutral colors that stand the test of time.

Why is minimalism your go-to aesthetic?
Sustainability is very important to me. That's why I want my closet to be full of pieces that are still relevant in 5, 10, or 20 years from now. Bright colors and prints will feel dated after a few seasons. That doesn't happen with minimal pieces in neutral colors.

Are you a lifelong minimalist or a convert?
A convert. I used to love wearing bright colors and prints. I remember two years ago, during Fashion Week, that out of all the showstopping runway pieces I was allowed to loan, I gravitated the most to two brown understated pieces. To this day, I love those looks, and I would wear them again. But that's not the case with some of the more extra looks I've worn before.
