How do I change my password in Remote Desktop?

HostGator is committed to making it easy to transfer your site to your new hosting account. We can transfer website files, databases, scripts, and one free domain registration transfer.

What qualifies me for a free transfer?

HostGator provides free transfers for new accounts within 30 days of sign-up, and to newly upgraded accounts. For upgraded accounts it must be an inter-server upgrade to qualify. Please note that downgraded accounts do not qualify for free transfers.

Depending on which type of account you sign up for, we offer differing numbers of free transfers. Please refer to the chart below to see what we include for new packages.

Full cPanel Transfers is the number of cPanel to cPanel transfers that are included.

Max. Manual Transfers is the maximum number of Manual Transfers that are included with your account.

Total Free Transfers is the total number websites that we will move for you.

1While we can do unlimited cPanel to cPanel transfers for you, depending on your account, you will have a limited number of Manual Transfers.

2Full cPanel transfers include all domains, Addon Domains, Subdomains, and cPanel settings. This will also include your emails and email accounts. Please note that this does require that your old host's cPanel backup generator to be active.

A few examples: An Aluminium Reseller account includes up to 30 free transfers. Out of this 30, you can have 20 cPanel to cPanel transfers and 10 Manual Transfers, or any combination of the two that totals 30 or less websites. Another example: A Pro Dedicated server includes unlimited cPanel to cPanel transfers, this means you can have 150 sites [or even more] moved. Also since there is an unlimited total number of transfers, you can utilize up to 100 Manual Transfers.

If you work remotely like most of us these days, you will likely need to change your password on your office PC.   If you press CNTL ALT DEL while connected to Remote Desktop session, your home computer’s security window will appear [SIGN OUT, LOCK, CHANGE PASSWORD] which does you no good.

4 Ways to Change Your Password In a Remote Desktop

1: CNTL ALT END

CNTL ALT DELETE by passes all programs and goes directly to the Windows Kernel, making that set of keystrokes very hard to hack.  To do send the same command to a remote computer, you can press CNTL ALT END.

2: LAUNCH THE WINDOWS SECURITY SCREEN VIA COMMAND LINE

  1. On the REMOTE computer, click the START button
  2. Paste [or type if you feel adventurous] C:\Windows\explorer.exe shell:::{2559a1f2-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}
  3. Click CHANGE PASSWORD

3: USE THE ON SCREEN KEYBOARD

This is very easy to do but has a twist you are not likely expecting:

  1. On the REMOTE computer, click the START button
  2. Type ONSCREEN
  3. Click ON-SCREEN KEYBOARD
  4. Here is the twist; press CNTL and ALT on your PHYSICAL keyboard
  5. Click DEL on the ON-SCREEN keyboard
  6. Click CHANGE PASSWORD

4: USE ACTIVE DIRECTORY USERS AND COMPUTERS

If you are an administrator of your corporate network you can change your password via ADUC.

If you are not a network administrator, you can ask your admin to change the password for you.

How can I change a Windows password before expiration on Remote Desktop session? Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del doesn’t give you options to change the password in the remote session, as that command will execute on your local PC instead of the remote one. In this tutorial we’ll show you 4 easy ways to change Windows password from Remote Desktop session.

Method 1: Pressing Ctrl + Alt + End

While connected to Remote Desktop session, press the Ctrl + Alt + End keyboard combination and it will open the Windows Security Screen. You’ll see the option to change your Windows password.

Method 2: Using On-Screen Keyboard

From within the Remote Desktop session, press the Windows key + R to open the Run box. Type osk.exe to bring up the On-Screen Keyboard.

Hold down both Ctrl and Alt keys on your physical keyboard, and then click the Del key in the On-Screen Keyboard. This will also open up the Windows Security screen.

Method 3: Using Command Prompt

Open an elevated Command Prompt. Type the following command and press Enter.
explorer.exe shell:::{2559a1f2-21d7-11d4-bdaf-00c04f60b9f0}

The new screen will show the option to change the password. If you need to frequently change a Windows password from RDP, you can create a batch file or desktop shortcut to run the above command.

Method 4: Using Windows PowerShell

Open Windows PowerShell as admin, and then execute this command:
[New-Object -COM Shell.Application].WindowsSecurity[]

This will bring up the Windows Security screen. There you can select “Change a password” to update your password.

Conclusion

In contrast to resetting Windows password, changing a password requires you to remember the current password. After changing your Windows password using the above methods, you should still have access to the EFS protected files.
