How do I remove all the backslashes from a string in Python?
This is not working for me:
result = result.replace["\\", result]
Do I need to treat result as a raw string?

Your code is saying to replace each instance of '\'
with result
. Have you tried changing it to result.replace["\\", ""]
?

Use decode['string_escape']
, for example:
result = stringwithbackslashes.decode['string_escape']
string_escape : Produce a string that is suitable as string literal in Python source code
or just:
result.replace["\\", ""]

If you are interested in seeing the component words that are being separated by the '\' character, use:
result.replace['\\', ' ']

When dealing with HTML
files and HTTP requests, the received data sometimes contains a huge amount of backslashes that are unnecessary and need to be filtered. This tutorial focuses on the different ways available in which we can remove backslashes from string in python.
The first part of the article focuses on the different ways available to remove backslash from string in Python, while the latter part focuses on the different ways available to replace backslash from json string in python.
What is a backslash in Python?Backlashes are mainly used in Python to implement escape characters. A simple example of an escape character would be the newline \n
. Backslashes are also really common in the web scraping department as HTML makes a lot of utility for
these backslashes.
- Using the
decode[]
function. - Using the
replace[]
function. - Using the
re
library functions. - Using the
strip[]
function.
Using replace[]
Function to Remove Backslash from String in Python
The replace[]
can be utilized to remove an escape sequence or just a backslash in Python by
simply substituting it with space in Python. The working of the replace[]
function is simple to understand as it substitutes the given substring with another substring that is specified in the function.
The following code uses the replace[]
function to remove an escape sequence containing a backslash from string in python.
x="Welcome\tto java2blog" x=x.replace["\t"," "] print[x] |
The above code provides the following output:
Welcome to java2blog
If the programmer wants to remove only a backslash, they can simply mention the "\\"
as the parameter instead of the escape sequence mentioned in the code above.
Using the decode[]
Function to Remove Backslash from String in Python
Python 2 allowed the decode[]
function to interact with strings in a program. This function helps in decoding a given string and returning the value of the initial string that was specified before the encoding process as its output.
Before moving on to demonstrating its implementation, it is important to highlight that unfortunately, this method does not work for Python 3 and the newer versions released afterward and is only applicable to the version of Python before Python 3.
The decode[]
function can be utilized to remove escape sequences from a string in Python.
The following code uses the decode[]
function to remove backslash from string in python.
x="Welcome\tto java2blog" y=x.decode['string_escape'] printy |
The above code provides the following output:
Welcome to java2blog
We should keep in mind that this program returns an error when running on Python 3. Moreover, we have followed the rules acceptable on Python 2 for writing this code.
Using re
Library Functions to Remove Backslash from String in Python
The re
library is simply an acronym
for Regular Expression
and provides various functions that make it easy to deal with Regular Expressions in Python. To use this method without any errors, we first need to import the re
library to the python code.
Here, we will utilize the re.sub[]
function to remove backslash from string in Python. We will now see how the re.sub[]
function is utilized to replace the \t
sequence character with a space in Python.
The following code uses the re
library functions to remove
backslash from string in python.
import re x="Welcome\tto java2blog" y=re.sub[r'\t','',x] print[y] |
The above code provides the following output:
Welcometo java2blog
Using strip[]
Function to Remove Backslash from String in Python
The strip[]
function is utilized to return a fresh string that contains the value of the string after the removal of the specified characters from the given string. This method can also be utilized to remove backslashes from the
given string by just specifying it within the strip[]
function.
The following code uses the strip[]
function to remove backslash from string in python.
x="Welcome\tto java2blog" x=x.strip['\t'] print[x] |
The above code provides the following output:
Welcome to java2blog
How To Remove Backslash from Json String in Python?
This half of the article discusses what is a json string and how to remove backslash from json string in Python.
What is aJSON
string in Python?JSON
can be simply defined as code written with the help of JavaScript Object Notation
and is fundamentally
utilized to carry out the purpose of storing and trading data. It holds a lot of ground in HTML
scraping and hence it frequently deals with backslashes in Python.
Moving on, we will look at the different ways available to remove backslash from a JSON
string in Python.
- Using the
json.dumps[]
andjson.loads[]
function in the same order. - Using the
replace[]
function along with thejson.loads[]
function.
Let us consider we get the following response, which needs to be converted into a JSON string and needs backslashes removed from it.
x="u'{\'Student Name\': \'Aryan\', \'Singh\': {\'Batch\': 2018}}'" |
We will work on the same string for both the methods to convert it into a JSON
string and remove the backslash from it.
Using json.Dumps[]
and json.Loads[]
Functions in The Same Order to Remove Backslash from Json String in Python
If utilized in the order for first implementing the json.dumps[]
function and then the json.loads[]
function,
we can successfully remove backslash from json string in python.
The following code uses the json.dumps[]
and json.loads[]
functions in the same order to remove backslash from json string in python.
json.Dumps[]andjson.Loads[]Functions"> import json x = "u'{\'Student Name\': \'Aryan\', \'Singh\': {\'Batch\': 2018}}'" json_x=json.dumps[x] json_mod_x=json.loads[json_x] print[json_mod_x] |
The above code provides the following output:
u'{‘Student Name’: ‘Aryan’, ‘Singh’: {‘Batch’: 2018}}’
Using replace[]
Function Along with The json.Loads[]
Function to Remove Backslash from Json String in Python
Although the above-mentioned function works just fine and can simply be utilized to implement the task of removing
backslash from json string in python, there are still some cases where all the backslashes might not get removed. In those cases, we can manually utilize the replace[]
function to implement this task.
The following code uses the replace[]
function along with the json.loads[]
function to remove backslash from json string in python.
replace[]FunctionAlong with Thejson.Loads[]Function"> import json x = "u'{\'Student Name\': \'Aryan\', \'Singh\': {\'Batch\': 2018}}'" json_x = json.dumps[x] json_mod_x = json.loads[json_x.replace["\\", ""]] print[json_mod_x] |
The above code provides the following output:
u'{‘Student Name’: ‘Aryan’, ‘Singh’: {‘Batch’: 2018}}’
Conclusion.
This article was focused on and provided the different ways available to remove backslash from string in python. First, we look at the methods to remove the backslash from a regular string in python, while the latter half of the article demonstrates how to remove backslash from json string in python.
