Athena, the first gamer laptop with Ubuntu 16.04 pre-installed

The world of laptops for Gaming It is clearly dominated by the Windows environment but, on this occasion, the Entroware company has announced the launch of a new computer dedicated to the world of the most gamers with Ubuntu operating system pre-installed.

Specifically, we are talking about the version of Ubuntu LTS 16.04, which will come standard in the teams with Unity and MATE desktops to choose from. The hardware of the equipment is very powerful, how could it be less for a team intended for the most demanding games.

The technical specifications of this equipment are especially surprising. We are talking about a computer with Intel Core i7 processor, in versions 6700HQ at 2,6 Ghz or 6820 HK at 2,7 GHz. The memory Computer RAM is selectable from 16 GB up to 24 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of type DDR4.Regarding storage, hard drives start from 500 GB SATA and increase in size up to 1 TB or even changing to SSD technology, with configurations of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.

An important section in any computer intended for games is the graphics card, which in this edition we will be able to choose within the brand NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M with 6GB or the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 M with 8GB. As it could not be missing, in the connectivity section we find traditional configurations of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Gigabit Ethernet.

The screens vary between the more traditional 15,6 inches with Full HD resolution in IPS LED at 17,3 inches, also in high resolution. The operating system, as we already mentioned, is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS [with Unity or MATE desktop] or simply without operating system.

A small detail that should be noted is Your keyboard, which we can order personalized with icons of the Ubuntu system itself, Ubuntu MATE, Windows or Entroware. In the guarantees section we find 7 days for resolution of dead pixels on the screen and 1 standard year for the rest of the equipment.

With some really powerful features, the Athena from Entroware has nothing to envy of other high-end notebooks. The base price of this equipment, with the minimum configuration that we have indicated in each case, amounts to 1099 pounds. A somewhat high price but quite common in systems dedicated to professional players. As we select more advanced options, the price will increase exponentially.

Mountain also has laptops - I don't know if for "gaming" - with Ubuntu from the factory. Little by little more and more brands are becoming interested.

There is a very good catalog on Linux. Yes it is true that this laptop is large by specifications, but there are games that consume resources in Linux, eh. That not all are "indies". Take a look on Steam for the SteamOS logo to appear and all of those are playable on Linux.

      - Trine
      - Trine 2

I have added the Tomb Raider, XCOM Enemy Unknown 2, Payday 2, Stellaris, and F1 2015 to the original listing. And I repeat, there are many, but many more games that can be played on Linux. All this through Steam, that if you pull PlayOnLinux the amount increases a lot. So save yourself absurd comments like "you can only play sudoku".

It's good that Linux is slowly making its way into the gamer market .... THANK YOU STEAM !!!!

I still use wintendo, just to play Mortal Kombat X and the odd game.

Hopefully VULKAN becomes popular and they can give more things to Linux!

    Thanks for the feedback.

It is true that Steam still has to improve its catalog as far as Linux system is concerned. Vulkan is promising but it seems that companies are going for the quick and easy for them: DX12. One of the last requests I was checking yesterday on the Steam forums was for Deus EX HKD to port it for Linux platforms. We will see what happens.

Wine carries it ... The more of us who use Linux, the more options we will have ...
