Cấu trúc But for

1. But for là gì?

Trong tiếng Anh, But for dùng để rút ngắn mệnh đề trong câu, được dùng trong văn phong mang nghĩa lịch sự.

But for là cụm từ được dùng với nghĩa: Nếu không có điều gì đó, thì điều gì đó đã xảy ra.

Ví dụ:

• But for my teacher’s help, I couldn’t have done the homework on science: Nếu không có sự giúp đỡ từ giáo viên của tôi, tôi khó có thể hoàn thành bài tập về nhà môn Khoa học.
• But for your help, I couldn’t have got this job: Nếu không có sự giúp đỡ của bạn, tôi đã không thể có được công việc này.
• I would have asked my crush to go on a date with me, but for the fact that she is in a relationship: Tôi sẽ rủ người tôi thầm thích đi hẹn hò, nếu cô ấy không có người yêu mất rồi.
• But for the fact that my teacher is busy now, she would come to class: Nếu cô giáo của tôi không bận lúc này, cô ấy đã đến lớp.

But for còn có nghĩa là ngoại trừ một cái gì đó; trong trường hợp này, but for đồng nghĩa với except for.

Ví dụ:

2. Cách sử dụng cấu trúc But for

2.1. Cấu trúc but for

But for + Noun Phrases/Ving, S + V…

Ví dụ:

• But for working hard, I wouldn’t complete my work: Nếu không làm việc chăm chỉ, tôi sẽ không hàn thành công việc của mình.
• But for her help, I won’t be able to do this project: Nếu không có sự giúp đỡ của cô ấy, tôi sẽ không thể thực hiện dự án này.

2.2. Cấu trúc but for trong câu điều kiện

Cấu trúc but for thường được dùng ở câu điều kiện loại 2 hoặc loại 3. Cấu trúc but for sẽ được sử dụng ở vế bao gồm if, hoặc còn gọi đó là vế điều kiện, mang ý nghĩa một điều gì đó có thể đã xảy ra, tuy nhiên có một điều kiện cản trở nó lại cũng như nó không xảy ra ở thực tế.

Công thức chung

• Câu điều kiện loại 2: But for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + V
• Câu điều kiện loại 3: But for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + have VPP

Ví dụ:

• But for my late arrival, I wouldn’t have missed the flight= If I hadn’t arrived late, I wouldn’t have missed the flight: Nếu tôi không đến muộn thì tôi đã không lỡ chuyến bay.
• But for the difficult view, that would be a lovely room= If it weren’t for the difficult view, that would be a lovely room: Nếu không vì tầm nhìn khó khăn, kia sẽ là một căn phòng đáng yêu.
• Leo would certainly have been included in the team, but for his recent injury= Leo would certainly have been included in the team, if he hadn’t been injured: Leo chắc chắn đã được ở trong đội hình, nếu anh ấy không có chấn thương.
• But for the rain, they would have had a good picnic= If it hadn’t rained, they would have had a good picnic: Nếu không vì trời mưa, họ đã có một chuyến dã ngoại tuyệt vời.

Ta cũng có thể dùng cụm “the fact that” phía sau “but for” nếu muốn dùng một mệnh đề ở vế điều kiện.

• Câu điều kiện loại 2: But for the fact that + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/…+ V
• Câu điều kiện loại 3: But for the fact that + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/…+ have VPP

Ví dụ:

• But for the fact that he was busy, my father could have taken me to the park: Nếu mà không bận thì bố tôi có thể đã đưa tôi đi công viên rồi.
• But for being busy, I could have gone out with my friend: Nếu không bận, tôi có thể ra ngoài chơi với bạn bè.
• Mike might take part in the party but for his sickness: Mike có thể tham gia buổi tiệc nếu anh ấy không ốm.
• Jane might take part in the Toeic test but for the fact that she was sick: Jane có thể đã tham gia cuộc thi Toeic nếu cô ấy không bị ốm.

3. Cách viết lại câu với But for trong câu điều kiện

3.1. Đối với câu điều kiện loại 2

Cấu trúc: But for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + V

• \=If it weren’t for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + V
• \=If it weren’t for the fact that + S + V-ed, S + would/could/might/… + V

Ví dụ:

But for my mistake, I could meet her within a day: Nếu không vì lỗi lầm của tôi, tôi có thể gặp cô ấy trong ngày hôm nay.

• \=> If it weren’t for my mistake I could meet her within a day
• \=> If it weren’t for being mistakenly, I could meet her within a day
• \=> If it weren’t for the fact that I was mistaken, I could meet her within a day.

But for my tardiness, I could be offered the position I dreamt of: Nếu không vì sự chậm trễ của tôi, tôi đã có thể nhận được đề cử vào vị trí tôi hằng ao ước.

• \=> If it weren’t for my tardiness, I could be offered the position I dreamt of.
• \=> If it weren’t for being tardy, I could be offered the position I dreamt of.
• \=> If it weren’t for the fact that I was tardy, I could be offered the position I dreamt of.

But for my carelessness, I would not forget my wallet: Nếu không vì sự bất cẩn của tôi, tôi đã không quên ví.

• \=> If it weren’t for my carelessness, I would not forget my wallet.
• \=> If it weren’t for being careless, I would not forget my wallet.
• \=> If it weren’t for the fact that I was careless, I would not forget my wallet.

3.2. Đối với câu điều kiện loại 3

Cấu trúc: But for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + have VPP

• \= If it hadn’t been for + N/V-ing, S + would/could/might/… + have VPP
• \= If it hadn’t been for the fact that + S + had VPP, S + would/could/might/… + have VPP

Ví dụ:

But for my brother’s advice, I could have chosen the wrong major in university: Nếu không có lời khuyên của anh trai tôi, tôi đã có thể chọn nhầm ngành ở đại học.

• \=> If it hadn’t been for my brother’s advice, I could have chosen the wrong major in university.
• \=> If it hadn’t been for being advised by my brother, I could have chosen the wrong major in university.
• \=> If it hadn’t been for the fact that I had been advised by my brother, I could have chosen the wrong major in university.

But for her mother’s advice, Susie could have married the wrong person: Nếu không có lời khuyên của mẹ cô ấy, Susie đã có thể cưới nhầm người.

• \=> If it hadn’t been for her mother’s advice, Susie could have married the wrong person.
• \=> If it hadn’t been for being advised by her mother, Susie could have married the wrong person.
• \=> If it hadn’t been for the fact that she was advised by her mother, Susie could have married the wrong person.

But for my sister’s advice, I could have chosen the wrong book in the library: Nếu không có lời khuyên của chị gái tôi, tôi đã có thể chọn nhầm sách ở thư viện.

• \=> If it hadn’t been for my sister’s advice, I could have chosen the wrong book in the library.
• \=> If it hadn’t been for being advised by my sister, I could have chosen the wrong book in the library.
• \=> If it hadn’t been for the fact that I had been advised by my sister, I could have chosen the wrong book in the library.

4. Một số lưu ý khi sử dụng cấu trúc But for

• Nếu mệnh đề but for đứng đầu câu thì sẽ ngăn cách với mệnh đề sau bằng dấu phẩy.
• Không sử dụng cấu trúc but for cho cầu điều kiện loại một và câu điều kiện hết hợp.
• Mệnh đề but for KHÔNG thêm not.
