TinyBuild Games and developer DogHowl Games announced that they'll be releasing their sci-fi horror title Level Zero in 2023. This particular game is an asymmetrical six-player PvP sci-fi survival horror title in which you will have to rely on your wits and instinct to survive. You play as a scientist in a team of scared scientists who are stuck having to deal with a vicious pack of alien monsters who want to rip you to shreds and leave nothing behind in this oddly shaped research station they suddenly appeared at. You'll need to work as a group using brains and stealth to make it out alive. Enjoy the trailer below!

"In Level Zero, light is life. Four players take on the role of a team of human scientists, scrambling to action as the power fails in their research facility. To stand any chance at survival, they must repair the base's power systems, or be consumed by the nightmares lurking in the shadows. The science team must coordinate and communicate to search for vital tools, failing fuse panels, and vital sources of light such as flares and glowsticks. Guns won't help against the threat they face – will anyone survive this dark day?

The second team enters the fray as a pair of endlessly respawning monsters, deadly and powerful in shadow, but terribly vulnerable to light. Armed with razor-sharp claws, blinding spit, and the ability to place living land mines, disable electrical systems with an organic EMP blast or disarm their prey with a primal scream, they are incredibly versatile and powerful hunters that thrive in darkness. Lethal and relentless, the monsters can sense the pounding heartbeats of the scientists and track their victims through the facility. The only thing they fear is light, capable of burning them to ash in an instant. And so begins a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. The monsters will not relent until every last scientist lies dead. Who will win in this tense battle of human ingenuity versus extraterrestrial brutality?"

Horror game 2023

Survival horror games will never go out of style. Something about danger being around every corner and a creepy atmosphere to keep the heart pumping: there is never a dull moment due to your mind creating situations where there probably isn’t any. The genre is kept fresh by putting players in different situations and perspectives. There is plenty to choose from, like first-person, third-person, psychological, gory, or realistic. When it comes to horror, there is no limit to what can be achieved what the right imagination.

The horror genre is about putting players in situations they wouldn’t want to see themselves in. Everyone has their fears, and the horror genre will appear different from others. Having said that, here are 6 survival horror games to look out for.

6. Dead Space Remake

It isn’t much known about this remake of the beloved Dead Space. However, we do know what they plan on implementing. The first game featured a dismemberment system. By shooting the limbs of certain enemies, they become much weaker, making them easier to kill. The remake is going to be taking that to the next level. Lighting is an important part of horror games.

Based on videos and quick glimpses provided by EA and Motive Studios, it is going to be phenomenal. With the power of Xbox Series X and PS5, this game may be one of the most frightening games since the original Dead Space. It is also being developed on the Frostbite engine. We may see enhanced destruction from enemies and weapons.

Dead Space Remake currently has a release window of sometime this year.

5. The Callisto Protocol

Here’s a game you should have on your list. Why? Because this game is being developed by co-creator  Dead Space and developers who worked on Call of Duty as well. The Callisto Protocol was announced at The Game Awards 2020 with a cinematic trailer. However, not much else has been shown from the game. It has almost been radio silent.

The only thing known so far is that it is a third-person story-driven survival horror game. It is currently scheduled for release sometime this year on consoles and PC. I wonder if it will try to compete with Dead Space Remake? Only time will tell.

4. Stalker 2: Heart of Chernobyl

Stalker 2 is survival horror in the truest meaning of the genre. In this sequel to the award-winning game franchise, players will find themselves in a post-apocalyptic dark science fiction setting. The gameplay is part immersive survival sim, first-person shooter, and horror. If it is anything like the first game, then it might be a little high on the difficulty scale.

The Stalker series rewards being smart and not rushing. While we only have little gameplay footage shown, it looks like it will keep the exploration gameplay from the original. As you dive deeper into the zone, players will also encounter monsters and anomalies. Making your track across the even more dangerous.

Stalker 2 was just recently delayed; it is now releasing December 8th, 2022, for PC and Xbox Series X/S.

3. Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 is shaping up to be great, bloody, and scary. While Dying Light 2 could be classified as a more action-oriented horror game, there’s still plenty of scares and survival. One of the mechanics of the original that is making its way back for the sequel is the more dangerous and aggressive infected during the night. Once the sun goes down, Dying Light becomes much scarier and creepier; survival and silence are essential.

Dying Light 2 also shows that horror isn’t always about monsters, but humans as well. Using humans and politics in a lawless time as a horror element is just as impactful. With a release date right around the corner (February 4th), players will be able to play Dying Light 2 very soon.

2. The Outlast Trials

The Outlast Trials is doing something a bit different from the series. This game will feature cooperative play. The Outlast Trials can still be played solo, but I wonder if they can make a game as unnerving and creepy as the first game when multiple people can play. Maybe, this game will change how players see cooperative horror games.

Set during the Cold War, The Outlast Trials takes place before the other games in the series. We know that players will be playing as humans involuntarily used as experiments to test the Murkoff Corporation’s brainwashing and mind control methods. While we only know little tidbits about the game, a teaser trailer and a gameplay trailer include some info as well. With a scheduled release for this year, more information should be coming soon.

1. Scorn

Scorn is a first-person horror adventure game in an unknown, nightmarish setting. This game has been in development for a very long time. Eight years to be exact. It was announced back in 2014 with a trailer that showed pre-alpha footage. Not much was shown, only the environment.

Ebb Software then failed to reach its goal in a Kickstarter campaign in late 2014. A month or so later, they received funding from a private investor. Another Kickstarter and a delay later have us ending up here. Honestly, it has been a crazy rollercoaster of a ride when it comes to the development of Scorn.

Hopefully, we get to see it finally, once it releases in October for PC and Xbox Series X/S.

Conclusion

As you can see, there are plenty of survival horror games coming out to get your adrenaline running. Whether you want a first-person survival psychological horror or a third-person action-survival horror, this year will have something for everyone. What’s crazy is that these are just scratching the surface. Many indie horror games release periodically on Steam. Watch out for those little gems as well.
