G63 2023

The original Mercedes-Benz G-Class stuck around for four decades and was given multiple updates over the years to keep it fresh. We're not sure how long Mercedes plans to keep the current G-Class on the shelf before giving it a redesign, but it looks like the automaker will at least give the vehicle periodic updates in similar fashion to its predecessor.

We've already spotted prototypes for an updated version of the standard G-Class, and now we have spy shots depicting a tester for the updated G63 from AMG. Both G-Class versions are expected to debut later this year as 2023 models, and prototypes for both are also featured in the video below.

Mercedes is also out testing a high-riding 4x4 Squared option for the second-generation G-Class, which we will likely see introduced together with this update.

Judging by the camouflage gear on the G63 prototype, we'll likely see a revised fascia introduced up front. And while the general shape of the grille should remain unchanged, a new mesh pattern is expected.

We're told that the dash was also covered up, suggesting some changes inside as well. A key update inside should be the addition of Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system, which features in every current Mercedes bar the G-Class.

The G63 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 good for 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. While AMG has just launched a plug-in hybrid powertrain using this V-8 in its GT 4-Door Coupe, we don't expect the G63 to go the plug-in hybrid route just yet.

A more likely bet is the addition of the mild-hybrid system already offered with the 4.0-liter V-8 in some Mercedes models. The system features an electric motor capable of adding a temporary boost of 21 hp and 184 lb-ft. An electric powertrain is planned for the G-Class, though it won't arrive until 2024.

Stay tuned for updates as development continues.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been lumbering around for over four decades, but it was only in 1999 when performance tuner AMG finally got its speedy engineers all over the truck in celebration of the icon's then-20th anniversary. Today, the performance automaker is celebrating another anniversary, the founding of AMG way back 55 years ago in 1967. But, instead of a special AMG sports car like you might expect, they've gone with the new Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 55 instead.

Of course, as these things go, the new G63 Edition 55 is mostly a cosmetic treatment worked over a model with many of its options boxes ticked. That's not exactly a bad thing, considering you get a hand-crafted 4.0-liter V-8 now making 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Compare that to the original AMG-tuned G-Class's 349 hp nd 387 lb-ft of torque, which was strong in 1999, and both AMG and G-Wagen sure have come a long way, without losing any charm or character. Perhaps that's why it was chosen to celebrate the brand, instead of one of the other sports cars.

The rest of the new G63 Edition 55 sports all-wheel drive of course, but with three differential locks, adaptive adjustable damping, and a nine-speed automatic transmission to deliver performance and luxurious comfort on and off the road.

The official Mercedes-AMG announcement says the Edition 55 "is finished in Obsidian Black metallic," though the first image shows the Edition 55 in its other, optional G Manufaktur Opalite White paint. Those will be the only two paint options available for this limited edition, of which only 55 will be built. The AMG emblem is present in the decal package, as seen above.

The image also shows off the AMG Night Package I and II that are equipped, which paints exterior features like the bumper trim, rear wheel cover, mirror caps, and protective pinstripes, also in Obsidian Black. The new model rides on 22-inch AMG forged cross-spoke wheels with a matte gray finish, and there's a chrome "AMG" fuel-filler cap.

The interior updates for the anniversary includes red-on-black leather contrasting seats, stainless steel door trims with red illumination, an "AMG 55" performance steering wheel, with carbon fiber trimmings on the dashboard and doors. Mercedes-AMG has thrown in a "breathable flannel" indoor car cover with AMG branding, you know, something perfect for a big bulky off-roader.

The price for the anniversary package has not been announced in the U.S. yet, but the standard G-Class is around $131,000. The Edition 55 is probably more of a "ask if you're interested" sort of deal for those with enough money to actually afford one.

Mercedes' flagship off-roader has been hit with a $51,000 price rise – its 12th increase in four years – to coincide with a handful of new features. However, demand is so strong, order books are still closed in Australia.

The 2023 Mercedes-AMG G63 now costs nearly 50 per cent more than it did four years ago – with few additional features – with yet another sharp price rise.

However, Australian customers are still not able to order one because Mercedes has stopped accepting deposits until it can work through its current two-year waiting list.

It's expected Mercedes-Benz Australia will "price protect" customers who have previously placed orders at cheaper RRPs. But when new orders commence, buyers will be asked to pay top dollar.

The Model Year 2023 Mercedes-AMG G63 has been hit with a $51,003 price rise, taking its recommended retail price (RRP) from $247,700 four years ago to $365,900 plus on-road costs today.

The new RRP is $66,900 more than the June 2021 price, and $118,200 more than Mercedes-Benz's launch price in 2018.

The latest increase equates to a jump of nearly 50 per cent (47.7 per cent) in four years – despite few new features being added to the standard equipment list over that period.

Despite a near-$70,000 price hike in 13 months, order books for the G63 have been closed for a year, as Mercedes-Benz Australia looks to clear a backlog that saw wait times break 12 months.

G-Class sales have repeatedly broken sales records in the months since orders closed – the vast majority of which have been twin-turbo V8 G63 variants, rather than the diesel G400d added in mid-2021.

It's understood existing customers in the queue are protected from the new price rises – meaning the new price will technically only come into effect once order books are re-opened.

Mercedes-Benz Australia says the price rise was necessary to “ensure [the G63’s] ongoing availability” in local showrooms.

“Although I’m unable to give specific details about how vehicle pricing is determined, I can confirm that due to the level of demand globally, it has been necessary to increase the vehicle price of the Mercedes-AMG G63 to ensure its ongoing availability in the Australian market,” a Mercedes-Benz Australia spokesperson told Drive in a statement.

New features have been added, in the form of a new microfibre AMG Performance steering wheel with carbon-fibre accents and a range of ‘G manufaktur’ personalisation options – plus, according to the Redbook third party, auto-dimming side mirrors.

“The price change coincides with a model year update, which also introduces new standard equipment including the AMG performance steering wheel in carbon fibre and microfibre with additional AMG controls, and an extensive new selection of ‘G manufaktur’ personalisation options for customers to choose from,” the statement continues.

The G63 is now Mercedes-Benz Australia's second-most expensive model, behind the Maybach GLS600, priced from about $380,000 plus on-road costs.
