IPhone 2023

Apple may follow the lead set by manufacturers of Android smartphones and launch its own premium “Ultra” smartphone next year with the iPhone 15. This one is already showing signs of becoming the most technologically sophisticated iPhone ever made.

The new iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max were recently released by Apple. But some experts already have their sights set on the next iPhone 15. Which will be available at the end of next year. Apple is preparing to make a significant modification to its upcoming line of iPhones. According to the well-known Ming-Chi Kuo analyst.

Indeed, based on his understanding, Apple wants to distinguish more clearly between the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Pro Max variant is anticipated to provide exclusive features or even superior components in 2023. Rather than simply being a bigger version of the iPhone 15 Pro.

The iPhone 15 Ultra will replace the iPhone 15 Pro Max

IPhone 2023

Gizchina News of the week

Apple may rebrand it as iPhone 15 Ultra rather than continuing to refer to it as the iPhone 15 Pro Max as it has done for years. In any event, Mark Gurman tweets in response to Ming-Chi Kuo, “As I predicted yesterday, Ultra is coming,” that this is what would happen.

Apple wants to emphasize the smartphone’s premium features by dubbing it the iPhone 15 Ultra. Much like other makers of Android smartphones have been doing for years. We specifically have the Galaxy S22 Ultra or the most current Xiaomi 12S Ultra in mind. With the new Apple Watch Ultra, an $800 super resistant connected watch made for sportsmen who love extreme activities. Apple has more recently added this price range to its catalog. Therefore, it wouldn’t be strange if an iPhone Ultra model appeared to balance the various Apple product lines.

However, we know that Apple would combine a periscope sensor with the new A17 CPU in its 2023 iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra models. However, switching from the exclusive Lightning connector to a USB-C connection would be the most significant shift.

The iPhone 15 might still be far out in the future, but Apple is preparing for big changes and we are already seeing substantial leaks and rumors about the 15 series.

So what will be new in the iPhone 15 and when is it coming? The iPhone 15 family is due in the fall of 2023, and we expect to see four models, similar to the iPhone 14 generation. However, Apple insiders claim that a tweaked design is possible, as well as some bigger changes on the inside.

As a quick summary, we expect to see the following: a 6.1-inch iPhone 15 as the starter model, a large 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus with a bigger battery, and then two Pro models, a smaller iPhone 15 Pro and its larger sibling, the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The latter model might actually launch under a different name altogether and be called the iPhone 15 Ultra to better signify how it has received bigger upgrades than in previous years, and one such upgrade might be a periscope zoom lens.

It is very possible that all four models will also come with a new USB-C type connector that will replace the Lightning port that Apple has been using for nearly a decade. That happens to be the same connector most other gadgets in the world use these days, so it might actually help reduce clutter in your drawer.

What else will be new? And how will the iPhone 15 series change from the iPhone 14? Read on for the details and don't forget that we continuously update this page as new information comes in.

iPhone 15 release date

Apple follows a strict schedule that hasn't changed in years: new iPhones always get announced in early September and arrive about a week and a half after the announcement event.

We expect Apple to stay this course with the iPhone 15 release date, so we can predict the unveiling to happen on Tue, Sept 12th, 2023, with an in-store release on Fri, Sept 22nd.

Of course, it is way too early to predict this with any reasonable certainty and these dates are based on Apple's usual yearly schedule rather than any leaked preliminary information.

iPhone 15 price

While we know quite a few details around the new features in the iPhone 15, we don't yet have any insight into the prices, and frankly, with the current inflation that would be a bit hard to predict so early.

Still, if we had to guess, we would say that Apple could stick with the same prices as the iPhone 14 generation, with a price bump possibly expected only for the souped-up Pro Max/Ultra model. Here is what those prices might look like:

iPhone 15 name

Media and leaks all refer to the upcoming 2023 iPhone series as "iPhone 15".

This is very likely to be the final name since in the last few years we have seen Apple shy away from using "S" extensions, so an iPhone 14S seems very very unlikely.

With this in mind, the four model names of the iPhone 15 series are expected to be as follows:

  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 15 Ultra

Nice and simple, isn't it?

As for the iPhone 15 Ultra model name rebranding, it's a possibility, but there is no certainty on the name of that model yet. Apple has only started using the "Ultra" brand name recently, first with the M1 Ultra chip for the Mac Studio in March of 2022, and then more recently with the Apple Watch Ultra, so it only seems logical that we see an iPhone Ultra in the future.

iPhone 15 camera

Leaks so far agree that the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models will continue having two cameras on the back, while the Pro/Ultra models will have additional cameras.

The iPhone 15 Pro is expected to have a triple camera system with the third lens being a 3X zoom one. The iPhone 15 Pro Max / Ultra, on the other hand, is expected to get a periscope style zoom camera, the first ever on an iPhone, which is probably the main reason why it might get that new "Ultra" branding. We don't yet know whether that camera will replace the currently used 3X zoom lens, or whether it will come as an additional (fourth) rear camera.

48MP on 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
Ultra-wide (all iPhone 15 models) 12MP, f/2.4 on 15 and 15 Max
12MP, f/2.2 on 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
Telephoto (only 15 Pro models) 12MP, f/2.8, 3X zoom
Telephoto #2 (only 15 Pro Max / Ultra) 5X or 10X periscope zoom
Front camera (all iPhone 15 models) 12MP, f/1.9, auto-focus

*based on early leaks and rumors.

Last we heard, reports claimed Lante Optics, one of the companies that is rumored to supply Apple with the zoom lens, continues raising its capacity for the prism required to make this lens. In those same reports, analysts were not sure whether the periscope lens will arrive exclusively to the iPhone 15 Pro Max model, or if the smaller 15 Pro model might get it too.

We will be updating this section with new information as it seems that details around this camera will continue leaking more and more.

iPhone 15 storage

Apple increased the base storage of regular iPhone models to 128GB with the iPhone 13 release, and we expect it will stick with the same amount of storage on the iPhone 15 series as well.

This means that the regular iPhone 15 and 15 Max models are expected to start with 128GB storage. We are not yet sure about the Pro versions, and there is a slight chance that Apple will kill the 128GB tier and replace it with a 256GB one, however, we think that is still not very likely to happen.

iPhone 15 / 15 Max storage capacity:

  • 128 GB
  • 256 GB
  • 512 GB

iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max or Ultra storage capacity:

  • 128GB
  • 256 GB
  • 512 GB
  • 1 TB

iPhone 15 design

So far, we have seen no early drawings or renderings of the iPhone 15 series, but the elephant in the room has got to be the very possible switch to a USB-C port from Lightning.

For years, Apple resisted using a USB-C port on iPhone, despite betting on a USB-C port for its iPads (first on an iPad Pro in 2018) and Macbooks (first in 2015), but new regulation from the European Commission might finally force it to make the switch. This would mean that users will need to get new cables and throw away their Lightning cables, something that many people may not like. However, we believe, that in the long term this will work out for the better as most gadgets these days use a USB-C port, so you won't need to worry about getting different cables for your trips.

One of the most reliable Apple insiders, Mark Gurman, says that USB-C is "essentially a lock" for the iPhone 15.

As for design, we expect Apple to stick with what works, which is iPhones made of glass with a metal frame. Expect to see glossy glass with aluminum frames on non-Pro models, and frosted finish with stainless steel frames on the 15 Pro.

Interestingly, the rumored iPhone 15 Pro Max or iPhone 15 Ultra, is now expected to have a titanium frame rather than a stainless steel one. This would be a significant upgrade as titanium is a lighter weight material with superb scratch resistance, as brushed titanium hides such micro-scratches way better.

The Dynamic Island that Apple introduced with the 14 Pro models is likely to remain a Pro feature in the iPhone 15 series as well, while the regular models are still likely to ship with the good old notch.

Currently, we don't know much about the iPhone 15 color options. We expect Apple to stick with what it has now, possibly adding a couple of new color finishes for those who want to try something different.

iPhone 15 display

Apple seems to have found the sweet spot for screen sizes and we don't expect it to do any major changes, so you will have a 6.1-inch screen size on the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro, and then a 6.7-inch screen on the iPhone 15 Max and 15 Pro Max.

All four models will use OLED screens, but some slight differences in the peak brightness will probably remain to give the Pro models a bit of an advantage.

The big question is around ProMotion. This technology was previously only available on the Pro models, and we are yet to hear whether Apple might change this in the 15 series, but we remain skeptical on that.

With the introduction of the Dynamic Island, we think all speculations about an under-screen camera and an invisible Face ID are put to rest and that is no longer even a possibility for the near future.

iPhone 15 processor and specs

While we already mentioned the divide between the regular iPhone 15 models that are likely to use a slower chip, and the Pro versions with a faster, Apple A17 Bionic chip, there is one thing that all four models might share: the modem.

Expect to see the same Qualcomm made modem on all four iPhone 15 devices. Apple has had a frenemy status with Qualcomm, and it tried to break free and develop its own modems, but analysts claim that has proven to be more difficult than expected, so Qualcomm it is.

We do expect, however, the Pro and Ultra models to come with 8GB of RAM (up from 6GB on the previous models), while the vanilla iPhone 15 and 15 Plus should stick with 6GB RAM.

Satellite connectivity made a debut on the iPhone 14, and we expect Apple to have worked out the kinks of the technology and for it to work even better in the iPhone 15 series.

iPhone 15 battery

Apple rarely makes big changes to its existing designs, so you cannot expect huge changes in iPhone 15 battery sizes.

Apple calls its iPhones "all-day" devices, but we feel that with moderate use the iPhone Plus and Pro Max/Ultra could be used two days between charges, with only the smaller models being one-day devices.

Pro 3,200mAh* 3,200mAh
Pro Max 4,323mAh* 4,323mAh

Will Apple increase charging speeds with the advent of USB-C charging on the iPhone? We don't have high hopes, but if we were to place a bet, we would say expect around 25W charging speeds on the smaller models, and 30W charging for the two larger models.

All four iPhone 15 models will also have MagSafe wireless charging, the magnetic charging solution by Apple that can be quite convenient.

iPhone 15 features and software

The iPhone 14 family marks the first time we see Apple use different processors for its Pro and non-Pro models, with the Pro models getting the newest chips and the non-Pro versions using the generation older processors.

We expect this unfortunate trend to continue in the iPhone 15 series too, but that will depend on the complicated processor manufacturing environment. Chip maker TSMC that supplies Apple with processors kicked off 3nm production that could be used in the Apple A17 Bionic chipset, but it's way too early to tell how this will scale, and that is one important factor that will determine the processors used in the iPhone 15 series.

We will be updating this section with new information as it comes in.

Should I wait for iPhone 15?

  • You should wait for iPhone 15 if you are excited about USB-C. Using just one cable for all of your devices sounds genuinely exciting. Photo enthusiasts should also save up for the Pro Max/Ultra model as that periscope lens might be a game-changer for photography and videography.

  • You should not wait for iPhone 15 if you... don't want to wait! The iPhone 15 launches in 2023! There are plenty of capable phones around, and you probably shouldn't expect massive leaps in performance speed or charging either.

What iPhone will be out by 2023?

Release: Not in 2022 As you might already know, the iPhone 15 Pro and Ultra won't be available until at least late 2023. Apple typically releases its premium iPhone set in September, and the iPhone 15's case should be no different.

What iPhone will release in 2024?

For 2024, Apple will push forward with the launch of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, and given that the iPhone 14 Pro Max display was better than the iPhone 13 Pro Max's, we can only expect improved attributes on the models launching two years from now.

Will iPhone 15 have Touch ID?

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who often reveals accurate insights into Apple's plans, Apple has tested an under-display version of ‌Touch ID‌ designed for the iPhone, but it is not expected to be present on the the ‌iPhone 15‌ or other flagship models in the foreseeable future.

Will there be an iPhone 14?

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today introduced iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, featuring two sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches — in a sophisticated design with impressive camera upgrades and groundbreaking new safety capabilities.
