Mipad 4 plus 48 hour review

One month after Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 & Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 Pro flagship tablets in China, the time has come for the lacun of the international version.

Xiaomi has decided to launch what they call the “Global Version” of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 5 through Aliexpress, since they have a lot of experience with global shipping anyway, and have good customer support.

Delivery is estimated to October 9, and though the regular price starts at $474, there will be a September 23 to 24 early bird price where the price is just $299, which would be quite the bargain.

OS on the global version is still MIUI for Pad, but everything will be in English and other supported languages.

Xiaomi is not intending to slow down its production, proposing an ever-increasing number of new devices. In fact, the smartphone market has given the company the opportunity to make itself known on European soil, subsequently importing many other products related, for example, to home automation, mobility, etc. Among the many devices that revolve around the Chinese giant, and which have always impressed the public quite positively, there are the tablets. We speak, in particular, of the Mi Pad series that currently consists of the presence of the Xiaomi I Pad 4 Plus LTE, direct successor of the Mi Pad 4. Find out all the details in our review.

Design and materials

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus does not differ much from its predecessor, offering practically identical aesthetics. The dimensions in this case are, however, slightly larger, given the larger screen diagonal. We are in the presence, in fact, of a device that measures 245.6 x 149.08 x 7.99 mm, with a total weight of well 485 g. One-handed use is inevitably compromised but the data is explicit poco does not have to alarm. The tablet returns a very good feeling of solidity, without revealing any creaking whatsoever.

The whole body is made of aluminum frosted, with a single plastic band superior that improves the reception of the antennas. On the rear profile there is also a single camera that protrudes about 1 mm compared to the profile of the tablet. The right frame, on the other hand, is characterized by the presence of the Power button and the volume rocker.

On the left side there is space SIM slot/micro SD, while below we have two speakers, the entrance USB Type-C 2.0 and the second microphone. Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus also has an entrance mini-jack for the headphones, positioned at the top, in the company of the main microphone.

Frontally there is a soft touch button, which implements a comfortable one biometric sensor. From a safety point of view, unlocking takes place approximately 9 times on 10, resulting really very responsive. The software also allows you to take advantage of the front camera for the Face Unlock, not very reliable in low light conditions, while with good light It always appears to be quick and quite accurate. Above the display, there is also a camera and a Notification LED white that, unfortunately, is not very flashy. Obviously, there are also proximity and brightness sensors.

Display

The display mounted on Mi Pad 4 Plus is a unit LCD, of matrix IPS, from 10.1 inches of diagonal. The resolution is 1920 1200 pixels x while the form factor is in 16:10, same report present on Mi Pad 4. The density of 224 PPI it is, however, lower than that recorded on the previous model, given the wider diagonal. THE colors offered by the screen are quite balanced, and from the settings you can change the initial configuration.

Being an IPS panel, we have neri poco deep and whites which, at different angles, tend slightly towards blue. Furthermore, the front glass has no curvature and ends its travel at a thin plastic edge that runs along the entire perimeter of the tablet. Still regarding glass, then, there is a oleophobic treatment not up to par of expectations, retaining far too many imprints. This last criticism, by the way, holds true also for the metal body rear.

Il touch screen, to 10 touches, it's always enough precise and reactive, not revealing any problems in daily use. Only in the process of writing it proves poco lightning fast. There brightness maximum, in closed environments, is more than sufficient to guarantee you a good experience of use with the product. When the light conditions become more difficult, under the sun's rays, it is complicated to interact with the contents on the screen in a clear and precise way. Although the viewing angles they are good, in fact, the front glass reflects a lot of external light.

Hardware and Performance

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus presents a hardware equipment almost no different from that implemented on its predecessor. On this unit we find, in fact, a Qualcomm chipset Snapdragon 660, an octa-core CPU with 4x Kryo 260 from 2.2 GHz and 4x Kryo 260 from 1.8 GHz. As far as memories are concerned, however, we are in the presence of 4 GB di RAM LPDDR4X-1866 dual channel e 64 GB of type memory eMMC 5.1. The internal storage is expandable, among other things, up to 256 GB through the use of a microSD.

Thanks to the aforementioned characteristics, it is not possible to get into no performance problem, as the tablet generally proves to be responsive and fast in opening applications. The fluidity offered by the interface is not, however, what I would have expected to find on a Xiaomi product. In fact, sometimes the system presents some lag and little indecision which slightly penalize our overall assessment.

As is appropriate for every device of this type, the multimedia it should be one of the strengths to focus on most. Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus does not present any problem in playing videos in 1080p e 4K (even if the display does not allow to use such a resolution). Even with Youtube I did not record any criticality, as well as on the most popular streaming platforms. Netflix e Amazon Prime Video they work perfectly but have only one handicap: the maximum resolution can not exceed i 480p because of the certification Widevine L3.

As regards the Gaming, on the 4 Plus Mi Pad there is a Adreno GPU 512 that is able to offer good performance. On Real Racing 3, for example, allows you to maintain a fair frame-rate with average details, offering fluid races and without excessive lag. After a prolonged play session, however, the device it can start to heat up at the top, never reaching worrying peaks. During the various tests carried out, the tablet did not report, in fact, significant thermal throttling, although the CPU could not make the most of its possibilities.

Benchmark

Software

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus currently mounts the MIUI 10.1 China Stable, which is based on Android Oreo 8.1.0. The security patches, among other things, date back to October 2018. Many of our most loyal users, but also those who follow the technological world with great fervor, know that the customization offered by Xiaomi is one of the richest in the Android area. In fact, smartphones have always provided noteworthy performances, thanks to an MIUI 10 able to satisfy the majority of customers.

The version dedicated to this tablet, however, does not seem to follow as good as seen on the phones. In fact, they are present some limitations really important, such as the impossibility of positioning the widget or the lack of customization of the grid of applications, which forces us to be content with the 4 × 6. However, the functions are present Dual Apps e Gaming Mode, the first of which was still absent on the 4 Mi Pad with MIUI 9.

On this model, then, were added full screen gestures, which we have already had the opportunity to appreciate on the smartphones of the same Chinese house. In this case, however, their implementation suffers from some small deficit. When we use the device in a vertical position the gesture that allows us to return to the previous page with a swipe will not be active for a good half of the screen. Fortunately, the same speech is not valid in the horizontal, where the covered range is much wider.

Photographic quality

The tablet features two cameras: the rear sensor is a 13 mega-pixels with opening f / 2.0, while the front one is from 5 mega-pixels always with opening f / 2.0. Photographic quality does not excel in any situation, giving back pleasant shots only in good light conditions. Generally it is also necessary to hold your hand steady to avoid running into a rough shot.

The interface offered by the software is really very simple and intuitive, also making use of the HDR mode which, however, does not do any actual work. The shots taken using this support, in fact, do not differ at all from the others. The photographic section also allows you to record videos in Full HD to 30 fps, which do not however have a good stabilization. There auto focusinstead, I was particularly struck by its reactivity and softness.

Connectivity and audio quality

Moving to the sector related to connectivity, the module Wi-Fi ac Dual Band of Mi Pad 4 Plus is really good, succeeding in guaranteeing almost identical performances even in the points of the house where usually many products come into crisis. This allows, therefore, to dabble in a web browsing more than enough, returning short times for the opening of any site. This model also has a form LTE, Up to 600 Mbps, which offers one good coverage. I was able to test this last feature with one SIM Fastweb and I have not detected any critical issues. Unfortunately, the presence of an entrance USB Type-C 2.0 does not allow compatibility with external monitors, but despite this the data transmission speed is adequate.

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus presents two stereo speakers lower, which should offer a good overall effect. On a practical level, however, their position does not allow them to be fully enjoyed, given that the sound is not well conveyed towards the user's point of view. The quality, in any case, is just sufficient, with bass almost completely devoid of depth. The volume turns out to be quite high, managing to distinguish voices well even in the most crowded places. In the latter case, however, I recommend using a pair of well-made headphones, thanks to which you will be able to enjoy a better hearing experience. It is not present, then FM radio.

Autonomy

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus mounts a battery from 8620 mAh, therefore much larger than the one already tested on the 4 Mi Pad. Thanks to such capacity it will be possible to cover it extensively two days of use. Despite stressing the device for several hours, with some gaming sessions, watching TV series on Amazon Prime Video, consulting various social networks and browsing the web, I was unable to download it in a single day. During this test, among other things, I alternately used the network Wi-Fi and LTE.

About 11 operating hours, I've reached poco more than 8 hours on screen turned on, with one more 35% of residual charge to spend in the night. There recharge complete is enough slow due to the power supply included in the package, which offers an output to 5V 2A, employing poco more than 4 hours and minutes 30.

PROJECTED IMPACT

Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Plus offers virtually identical performance to those offered by its predecessor, the 4 Mi Pad. Our version, the one with Wi-Fi + LTE, also allows surf in mobility with the use of a simple nano SIM, presenting itself with a slightly higher price. The larger screen diagonal and a larger battery could make many users waver, but it must be considered that the first time you turn on Google services they are not present (although they can easily be installed with the classic procedures).

Despite the small uncertainties at the software level, I recommend this tablet to all those who are looking for a real alternative to the smartphone. In case you are a fan of streaming, however, you should probably look for some other alternative, although at a performance level it is difficult to find worthy rivals in the Android arena.
