As people sought entertainment and interaction under strict travel restrictions and lockdowns, many have picked up gaming as a hobby. The stage for competitive video gaming has since expanded as audiences grew and gaming became a profitable income stream. By 2024, the number of eSports enthusiasts is predicted to reach a total of 577.2 million. We have previously written about the incredible growth of eSports, but these events have been slowed by COVID limiting large public events and imposing travel restrictions. The COVID-19 pandemic saw the major success of live streaming platforms, which led to the increased reach of various eSports. However, most in-person events were canceled for two years, much to the dismay of fans and professional players worldwide. Now that the pandemic is easing, more major tournaments and conventions are announcing the return of physical events. Some have adapted a hybrid program setup so fans unable to attend in-person can still enjoy the live competitions and announcements. All year round, regional matches and leagues lead up to the decisive championships. With grand titles and lucrative prize pools at stake, professional teams give their all to win and entertain their fans. There are now dozens of major eSports events around the world, often with substantial prize pools. Whilst many of these events are still to announce dates or locations, in this post, we examine some of the most popular events for late 2022 and early 2023. The 25 Most Anticipated eSports Events:
The 25 Most Anticipated eSports Events:1. 2022-2023 Le Mans Virtual SeriesVenues: Sakhir, Bahrain; Monza, Italy; Spa, Belgium; Sebring, USA; and online Dates: September 17, 2022 (Round 1); October 8, 2022 (Round 2); November 5, 2022 (Round 3); December 3, 2022 (Round 4); January 14, 2023 (Round 5) The renowned Esports endurance series comes back with a five-round tour for the 2022/23 Le Mans Virtual Series. It is the second installment of five seasons of endurance racing. The first Le Mans Virtual season began in September 2021 and concluded in February 2022. Teams from different motorsport and esports competitions are invited by the selection committee to enter the race. The 2022/23 Le Mans Virtual Series kicked off at the race tracks of Sakhir, Bahrain, on September 17, 2022. The finale will be held at the Le Mans Virtual racing circuit on January 14, 2023, where drivers will be racing for 24 hours, vying for the championship title and their share of the $250,000 prize fund.
2. The 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022Venue: Hangzhou, China Dates: September 23, 2022 – October 8, 2023 eSports will be making its big debut at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, China. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that eight video game titles were added to the roster, namely: FIFA, Dota 2, League of Legends, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, Hearthstone, Street Fighter V, and Asian versions of PUBG Mobile and Arena of Valor. Each game will have a gold, silver, and bronze medal up for grabs. In total, 24 medals will be given out in China in 2022. In addition to those games, Robot Masters and VR Sports will be played as demonstration events at the games. 3. League of Legends Worlds Championships 2022Venues: Mexico City, Mexico; Madison Square Garden, New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; San Francisco, California Dates: September 29, 2022 – October 4, 2022 (Play-Ins); October 7-10, 2022, and October 13-16, 2022 (Groups); October 20-23, 2022 (Quarterfinals); October 29-30, 2022 (Semifinals); November 5, 2022 (Finals) The World Championship 2022 is back for its 12th iteration with tournaments in Mexico City, New York City, Toronto, and San Francisco. This competition is the pinnacle of the League of Legends competition; 12 teams from diverse regions compete for the world champion title. Twenty four teams from Riot Games’ 12 professional leagues participate in the monthlong tournament. Qualifications for the World Championships are a year-long process; players in various teams compete across 12 global leagues. Over 800 players will participate in the championship, climbing up the stages from Play-Ins starting September 29, 2022, until the Finals on November 5, 2022. 4. Elite Series League of Legends Pro-Am FinalsVenue: Brussels Expo, Brussels, Belgium Date: October 1, 2022 The GameForce in Brussels, Belgium, will host the Pro-Am Finals, the culmination of the Elite Series: League of Legends. With an €8,000 prize pool, 16 teams from the Elite Series and Benelux Regional League are invited to the Pro-Am Finals. The last two teams standing will fight to the victory for the coveted 2022 Pro-Am Champion title. 5. Apex Legends Global Series Year 3Venue: Online and In-Person Dates: October 8-10, October 15-17, October 22-24, October 29-31, 2022 (Preseason Qualifiers); November 6, 2022 – onwards (Pro League Split 1); January 2023 (Pro League Split 2 Qualifiers); June 2023 (Last Chance Qualifiers) Following up on the major success of this year’s Apex Legends tournament, Electronic Arts (EA) is setting up preparations for the Apex Legends Global Series (AGLS) Year 3 with a preseason Split 1 for the remainder of 2022. Split 2 and the rest of the tournament’s stages will unfurl in 2023. In addition to announcing competition schedules, EA also announces that AGLS Year 3 will be following an updated pro league for regular season matches. Every region’s Pro League can enter thirty (30) teams for maximum high-level competition and qualification chances. AGLS Year 3 will also host three (3) in-person competitions. Finally, the total prize pool for the upcoming tournament is priced at $5,000,000. 6. The International 2022Venue: Singapore Dates: October 8-12, 2022 (Last Chance Qualifiers); October 15-18, 2022 (Group Event); October 20-23, 2022 (Playoffs); October 29-30, 2022 (Finals) The International 2022 concludes the year-long Dota Pro Circuit. Coincidentally, it is also the eleventh (11th) run of the tournament, earning the nickname ‘The International 11’. This year’s tournament will be slightly different from the previous years’ stages; a Last Chance Qualifier Stage will be hosted on October 8, 2022, for the selection of an additional two qualifying teams. A total of 20 teams will take center stage for the International, expanding the group stage originally filled in by 18 teams. This event brings together DOTA 2 players around the world to compete; the game’s developer, Valve, hosts it. The International tournament consists of the top 12 teams. The tournament prize pool is crowdfunded via a battle pass system within the game. The 2021 prize pool topped $40 million, though no prize pool has been announced for 2022. Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement on The International. 7. Intel Extreme Masters Rio 2022Venue: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Dates: October 31, 2022 – November 13, 2022 Counter Strike: Global Offensive goes Major for the first time ever in Brazil with the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) 2022. Fans can cheer for their pick among the 24 participating teams in the in-person competition. IEM Rio 2022 will be split into three event stages: Challengers, Legends, and Champions. A fan fest will be held during the Champions stage for a more immersive and exciting experience among the fans. 8. 2022 Asia Pacific Predator League Grand FinalsVenue: Japan Dates: November 11-13, 2022 Powered by Intel, Predator Gaming, and Planet 9, the 2022 Asia Pacific Predator League makes its grand in-person return in Japan. This year’s event will witness teams from 15 countries showcase their expertise in Dota 2 and PUBG: Battlegrounds. The prize pool for both tournaments is $400,000. Winners also get to bring home product packages from Acer, such as the APAC Predator League Shield and Predator gaming products. 9. Elisa Masters Espoo 2022Venue: Espoo Metro Areena, Espoo, Finland Dates: November 16-20, 2022 The Elisa Masters Espoo 2022 will bless the gaming community with its first Official ESL Pro Tour Affiliate Event for Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). The event’s winner earns the opportunity to compete in the Play-In Stage of the IEM Katowice 2023, a highly anticipated ESL event in Poland. The tournament shall be split into Group and Playoffs stages, where the winner shall receive the IEM Katowice 2023 invite and prize money worth $200,000. 10. DreamHack 2022: AtlantaVenue: Atlanta, Georgia Dates: November 18-20, 2022 DreamHack 2022: Atlanta brings two days’ worth of competitions, expos, and musical performances. Bring your own computer and join fellow players in games like StarCraft II Masters and Magic: The Gathering. Players can also sign up for professional competitions for a range of games such as Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Tekken 7, and Street Fighter V. Connect, compete, and win at DreamHack. 11. DreamHack Winter 2022Venue: Jönköping, Sweden Dreamhack wraps up its massive 2022 program schedule with Dreamhack Winter 2022, in the same location as its big summer event. Dreamhack events are known for their esports tournaments. This year, like the summer event, DreamHack Winter will be host to the ESL Pro League Conference, though other esports events will also take place. Dates: November 24-27, 2022 12. CS:GO BLAST Premier: Fall Finals 2022Venue: Copenhagen, Denmark Dates: November 23-27, 2022 BLAST gears up for the Danish Global Offensive Fall Finals 2022 this coming November. The tournament will begin with eight teams on the Group Stage, advancing to the Playoffs with every win they secure. The prize pool for the Fall Finals 2022 is $425,000. The winning team will be crowned Champion and will advance to take their slot in the World Finals on December 2022. 13. IESF 14th World Esports ChampionshipVenue: Bali, Indonesia Dates: December 1-12, 2022 Since 2009, the International Esports Federation has been hosting the World Esports Championship to promote eSports as a valid and true form of sport. This 2022, the yearly championship will be launching its 14th edition with Indonesia as the host country. Several game tournaments will be featured at the 14th World Esports Championship, including TEKKEN 7, Dota 2, CS:GO, PUBG Mobile, and eFootball. Winners get to earn their share of the $500,000 prize pool. 14. CS:GO BLAST Premier: World Finals 2022Venue: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Dates: December 14-18, 2022 The BLAST Premier World Finals 2022 concludes the year-long tournaments in a grand finale in Abu Dhabi. Amid intense battles and grueling challenges, the world’s top 8 teams gather center stage in a decisive face-off to win the World Champion title. Teams confirmed to participate in this grand stage include Natus Vincere and the respective winners of the ESL Pro League, IEM Rio 2022, and the Fall Finals. Global Esports Games 2022Venue: Istanbul Dates: December 14-18, 2022 A strong advocate for esports as an innovative means of breaking barriers in sport, the Global Esports Federation hosts the annual Global Esports Games (GEG) every December. GEG 2022 features titles such as Dota 2, eFootball, PUBG Mobile, and Street Fighter V. Preparations for the event are in full swing, and it is set to kick off in Istanbul, running parallel with the GEFestival which celebrates the youth culture shaping the esports industry. 16. For instance, challenger events will take place side by side with other tournaments for players to level up and reach Ascension tournaments. To top it all off, casual players can join in the competitive experience of VCT 2023 with an all-new competitive in-game experience. This bridges the gap between VCT and the in-game progress of every player, regardless of their expertise or playstyle. 18. Esports Universe Summit 2023Venue: Hong Kong Date: TBA The Esports Universe Summit 2023 gathers the eSports community for opportunities of learning and to connect with some of the world’s biggest brands, top teams, investors, content creators, and game developers. While not exactly a tournament, the Esports Universe Summit 2023 is an avenue for stakeholders to gather and discuss the future of eSports. 19. Taipei Game Show 2023Venue: Taipei, Taiwan Date: February 2-5, 2023 With travel restrictions easing, the Asia Pacific Game Summit (APGS) is looking forward to the return of the 2023 Taipei Game Show as an in-person convention. The 2023 Taipei Game Show will be held at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 1. It will feature a B2B zone, where game developers, publishers, advertisers, and vendors gather to discuss partnerships and broaden the game dev ecosystem. Keynote speakers from the local and international scene of game development will also be invited. The B2C zone, on the other hand, is an expo featuring a diverse range of games from mobile to console. Fans can engage in game demos or even test out virtual reality (VR) games. 20. TEKKEN World Tour FinalsVenue: Amsterdam, Netherlands Dates: February 4-5, 2023 Amsterdam sets the stage for the grand TEKKEN World Tour Finals on February 2023. 24 players from 16 regions across the globe will fight their way to win the Championship title and their share of the $100,000 prize pool. Qualifier matches will determine the first 21 players to take their slots in the Global finals. A last chance qualifier between 3rd place winners in North America, Western European Union, and Japan regional matches will take the remaining 3 slots in the finals. 21. EVO Japan 2023Venue: Tokyo, Japan Date: March 31, 2023 – April 2, 2023 EVO Japan returns stronger than ever this 2023 as a physical eSports convention. EVO Japan 2023will feature game titles TEKKEN 8, The King of Fighters XV, Guilty Gear Strive, and Street Fighter V. Fans and players can engage in intense competition in Tokyo Big Sight, a renowned convention center. EVO Japan 2023 is bound to be a historical event in eSports, as it will be taking place in Japan, the homeland of competitive fighting games. 22. BLAST.tv Major 2023Venue: Paris, France Date: May 2023 2023 is a paramount year for France. Paris is set to host its first-ever Counter Strike Major event with the BLAST.tv Major 2023. As one of the biggest esports events in the community, the BLAST.tv Major 2023 precedes other international events hosted by France as well, such as the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympic Games. This will also be the first time the Denmark-based esports media company BLAST organizes a Major tournament. 23. EsportsTravel Summit 2023Venue: Toronto, Canada Dates: July 12-14, 2023 The ESportsTravel Summit 2023 is the largest convention of eSports event organizers with a primary focus on travel and tourism. Here, event organizers, sports commission representatives, event suppliers, and hotel chains engage to broaden their knowledge of eSports, its impact on the tourism industry, and the profitability of eSports events. The ESportsTravel Summit 2023 is set to take place in Toronto, Canada. 24. IESF 15th World Esports ChampionshipsVenue: Iași, Romania Date: TBA While Indonesia is preparing for the 2022 World Esports Championships, the International Esports Federation (IESF) has already announced that the 15th World Esports Championships will take off at Iași, Romania. 1,200 players will represent over 130 nations in the event. More details are set to be released after the conclusion of this year’s championships. 25. M4 World ChampionshipVenue: Jakarta, Indonesia Dates: January 1-15, 2023 Indonesia is prepping the stage for the 2023 M4 World Championship after the official announcement from Moonton earlier this June. The grand M4 World Championship is the biggest annual tournament for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Qualifier matches for the championships are actively taking place as teams from countries such as the Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia compete to earn the top rank on their leaderboards. |
