Driving the 2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is a pleasant car to drive. It has no delusions about being a hot hatch, but the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine under the hood delivers enough pep for an enjoyable drive. If you prioritize efficiency over performance, you’ll appreciate this frugal engine.

Handling is a similar story. It’s fun to whip around corners thanks to its small footprint, but this hatchback is still plenty comfortable in around-town and highway driving.

If it’s been a while since you’ve driven an affordable compact car, you may be pleasantly surprised by how quiet and refined the ride is in the Corolla Hatchback.

Interior Comfort

The interior of the Toyota Corolla Hatchback has a modern design and nice tech features. The standard infotainment system is a user-friendly 8-inch screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it easy to bring up your maps, music, and more.

The front seats are comfortable and plenty roomy. The rear seats are okay for kids and shorter adults, but there isn’t much room back there. As for cargo space, you get 17.8 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats. You’re treated to much more cargo space if you fold down the back seats.

Exterior Styling

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback has pretty sporty styling for such a practical car. It has a sharp light signature and sporty new front and rear fascias for 2023. It’s also available in some fun colors like Inferno and Blue Crush, and the optional black roof really makes it stand out.

The Corolla Hatchback is on the smaller side of its class, measuring a bit smaller than the hatchback variants of the Honda Civic and Mazda3.

Favorite Features

1. Toyota Safety Sense 3.0
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback is generous with standard safety tech features for a car in this price range. The standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system includes features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, road sign assist, and automatic high beams.

2. Quick and efficient engine
The standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine under the hood of the Corolla Hatchback strikes a nice balance of performance and efficiency. It’s energetic enough to deliver an enjoyable drive, plus it returns up to 40 mpg on the highway.

3. 8-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia
This feature-rich infotainment system comes loaded with connectivity features like wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, making it easy to connect your smartphone to the screen in your car.

4. Generous cargo hold
The Corolla sedan has a pretty small trunk, but the Corolla Hatchback has more space for your stuff while taking up less room in the garage. It has 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, which increases when you fold the seats down.

5. Black roof
The Corolla Hatchback is available with a Midnight Black Metallic roof in contrast to one of the bold available paint options like Inferno and Blue Crush. This stylish option makes this hatchback stand out.

6. Intelligent Assistant
This optional tech feature makes the infotainment system in this Toyota a little smarter. It responds to “Hey, Toyota” voice prompts so you can get directions, control the audio, and more by just using your voice.

Engine & Transmission

Most 2023 Toyota Corolla Hatchback models are powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The manual transmission option for this engine has been discontinued for 2023.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) comes standard on every Corolla Hatchback. If you’re looking for a compact car with all-wheel drive (AWD), consider the Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, or the hybrid version of the Corolla sedan.

This souped-up version of the Corolla Hatchback is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and the sport-tuned GR-FOUR AWD system. Rated at 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, it primarily competes with the Subaru WRX and the upcoming Honda Civic Type R.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
